If asked (and I think Tracy Gustilo DID ask in her post about you) to pick my four main thoughts about history, I'd say (in no particular order) that history shows us that it's very difficult working out causality in complex systems. That it's really hard to generalize when we have only particulars to go on. That it's all about contingency. But that it's equally all about agency.
