About Byte-sized History
This blog is a place for me to share my thoughts on business and technology through a historical lens. The posts set recent technological developments in a historical context to shed light on their potential impact. In my day job, I think a lot about where venture capital and private equity firms should invest, so I tend to incorporate that while thinking more about societal implications.
My academic work focuses on the creative industries so my articles on substack will tend to anchor there, however I also cover a broad range of industries in my writing.
About me
In my day job, I’m a management consultant who uses data and analytics to help Fortune 500 companies find new ways to grow. For the 100+ clients I’ve worked with, I often investigate new technologies to help clients understand how they could leverage their own capabilities to succeed in a new space.
I got here through a long and winding road, mostly through academia. After earning my MSc in Economic History at the London School of Economics, I worked as a Technology Consultant for a while before getting my PhD at MIT, where I studied Economic Sociology.
If you’re interested in my academic work, I’ve published here:
American Journal of Sociology: Death of the Salesman but Not the Sales Force: How Interested Promotion Skews Scientific Valuation
Management Science: Judgment Aggregation in Creative Production: Evidence from the Movie Industry
Social Science Research Network: Architectural Misfits: Console Video Game Makers and the Rise of Mobile Games
Outside of writing, I’ve given talks at MIT, Harvard, Penn, and the University of Texas. And, somehow, I’ve amassed nearly 5 million views on TikTok with my BCG Careers videos.
Why I write here
Several of my professors suggested I start a Substack to keep track of my thoughts, get feedback on my work, and improve my writing. Since launching Byte-Sized History in 2023, I’ve found that it does all these things while also giving me a space to share thoughts that have no outlet elsewhere. The best part of all, though, is hearing people’s reactions. So please, tell me what you like (or don’t) through a message or a comment!
I should warn you that this is not my day job; I do this to learn and have fun, so I take risks! And, to balance out my actual job, I use a less data-focused style so that I can be free to ponder. These things may change as my style evolves. But, for now, I’m enjoying this approach, and I hope you will too.
